Getting Your Home-Based  Business Started

Introduction

One of the first points to consider when starting your home-based business is to remember that you will be faced with several challenges. One is to find a designated space within your home that can be used exclusively for business, the other challenge is to balance work and family. In order to accomplish this, it will be necessary to compartmentalize your business operations. You many want to post business hours so you don't use valuable family time for business tasks. You may find yourself doing just the opposite, i.e. taking business hours to do "just one more load of laundry". If you find it difficult to separate work and family life, you may want to consider an office outside of your home. Several other issues are phone and mail service. If you don't want to use your home address for business, consider a post office box. Using your family phone for business is unprofessional and may give the impression that you are not established in business and therefore not as dependable or capable as your competition. You will need to address the issue of home occupancy. Each county in Maryland has home occupancy regulations and you need to contact your specific county for a registration form and fees.
