SBDC client Honey Bun Cake Factory
specializes in baking tantalizing honey bun cakes, which come in dozens of
flavors, like red velvet and pina colada. Located in Bryans Road, MD, co-owners
Anthony and Tisha McFarland offer direct sales, as well as catering and
wholesale services to restaurants in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
Like many businesses, the Honey Bun Cake Factory faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the McFarlands sought assistance from the Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to navigate these difficulties. With expert guidance from Consultants Bill Hitte, Dan Rebarchick, and SoMD Regional Director Wynne Briscoe, they were able to implement strategies that increased their revenue and strengthened their market position.
Their efforts have been met with success. The Honey Bun Cake
Factory was awarded a $10,000 grant through the Charles County Business Growth
Advantage Program, which enabled them to expand their operations and hire
several full-time employees.
When asked about their experience with the Maryland SBDC, Tisha McFarland stated, “SBDC gave me advice on funding for my business. SBDC is very empathetic to business owners, especially after COVID.”
The Honey Bun Cake Factory will be showcasing their
signature desserts at the Maryland Association of Counties (MaCo) Summer
Conference in August 2024, during the “Taste of Maryland” Reception in Ocean
City, Maryland, an event highlighting exceptional food and beverages from
businesses across the state.
